Although summer is coming to an end, many of us are still tempted to let our pets take a refreshing swim on a warm day.  However, recent news reminds us that not all bodies of water are safe for our animal friends.

The Columbus Dispatch published an article on 9-9-2011 regarding the death of a dog who had been drinking from the pond located at Three Creeks MetroPark.  The pond is currently being tested for blue/green algae.

Dr. Seimer, our practice owner and veterinarian recommends only letting dogs swim in swimming pools, or bodies of water such as streams and creeks where the water is continually running. 

The bottom line is, not all contaminated water looks dangerous.  Many ponds however, contain run-off from fertilizer or pesticide, as well as numerous bacteria, parasites, and in this unfortunate case, algae.
