The breed has several unique characteristics, tail included. The tail on this breed is like a finger print-no two tails are ever exactly alike. The back legs are slightly longer than the front legs. The head is triangular, with the ears upright and at right angles on the head. Their oval eyes give the face an oriental look.
Japanese Bobtails can have long or short hair, and come in solid colors, mi-ke (calicos), vans, and bi-colors. They can also have a tabby pattern, either spotted, mackerel, or classic. Their hair is soft and silky, and with no undercoat, only requires a weekly combing.
This breed is strong and generally healthy. Japanese Bobtail kittens develop slightly faster than other breeds, and walk earlier and are active earlier than most kittens. Japanese Bobtails are also naturals on the Feline Agility Course!
The manga character Hello Kitty is a Japanese Bobtail. Muta, from The Cat Returns, is based on a stray Japanese Bobtail that hung around the studio.
