The Akita first came over to the United States with Helen Keller in 1937.  They were accepted into the AKC’s Working Group in 1972.

The Akita originated in Japan, where is carries a strong spiritual significance.  Although bred as a hunting dog, they are also seen in Japan as companions, protectors, and symbols of good health.

Today’s Akitas are primarily companions, though they are also known as bear hunters and guard dogs.  Akitas are strong-willed dogs who require early training and socialization.  They do best with children when raised with them.  Akitas like to be the pack leader and will run the home if allowed.  They also need a lot of exercise and to be kept busy to keep them out of trouble.

The Akita stands 24-28 inches tall and weighs on average 75-120 pounds.  The average life expectancy is 10-12 years.  They are a double coated breed with a very think undercoat which requires daily brushing.

Common health concerns for the Akita include gastric dilatation volvulus (GDV or Bloat), Cushing’s Disease, Hypothyroidism, Glaucoma, Hip Dysplasia, and less commonly Von-Willebrands Disease and various auto-immune diseases.
