Once known as China’s Lion Dog, the Pekingese can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty in the 8th century.  Recognized by the AKC in 1906, the Pekingese belongs to the Toy Group, its purpose being that of companion.

The Pekingese is a small dog weighing in at approximately 14 pounds and standing 7-9 inches tall.  Its small size makes this breed a good “lap dog.”  While it doesn’t need a lot of room, the Peke, as it’s affectionately known, still needs a little exercise to avoid becoming overweight.

This hardy little dog does require frequent grooming to keep the long, thick undercoat in good condition.  Also the folds on the face should be cleaned regularly.  If owners cannot keep up with regular grooming at home, a visit to a groomer every 6-8 weeks is recommended.

The life expectancy of the Pekingese is 12-14 years, however several problems can arise in this breed.  Common health issues include heart disease, skin issues, and eye and breathing issues, the later due to the facial design of the breed.

The Pekingese, while could be difficult to housebreak, makes a good apartment pet.  For more information on the Pekingese, visit www.akc.org .
