Dental Health Month

Dental Care in Pets is as important as it is in people.  Studies have shown that 90% of dogs and cats over 2 years old
have periodontal disease.  Dental disease usually begins with the buildup of plaque (colorless film on teeth containing
large amounts of bacteria.  This hardens into tartar near and below the gumline and leads to gingivitis.  Left untreated
dental disease can cause pain and damage to teeth and gums.  The bacteria in the mouth can also spread via the
bloodstream to internal organs such as the heart, liver, or kidneys.

Factors influencing dental disease include age, breed, & lack of dental care at home.  An oral exam is included in our
physical exams.  We will look at the teeth and gums (as the patients permit us).  It is not possible to see every part of every
tooth during a routine exam.  Potential problems will be noted and you will be advised as to how to remedy the problem.

Signs of Dental Disease include:
-  Bad breath             -  Bleeding gums          -  Dribbling saliva         -  Tooth loss
-  Tooth root abscess (sometimes visual on face)
-  Change in eating habits or refusal to eat
-  Rubbing/Pawing at mouth

Like with people, pets need home dental care to keep their teeth and gums healthy.  They also need regular
professional cleanings throughout their lifetimes.  With pets, this involves general anesthesia.

When a pet is presented for a dental cleaning, a physical exam and blood work are performed prior to anesthesia.
A Dental Cleaning involves:

-  A complete oral exam. The entire mouth, including gums and all surfaces of the teeth, are examined for any
potential problems.
- The teeth are scaled and polished like what is performed with a human dentist.
- Dental Radiographs (if necessary) are taken to view tooth roots and the bone beneath the teeth.
- Oral surgery (if necessary) can be performed to extract problem teeth during the same visit.
