Heartworm-Prevent vs Treat

Heartworm disease is preventable, treatable, fatal...all of the above.  Left untreated, Heartworm disease is fatal.  However, even with treatment, your dog could still die from Heartworm disease or the effects of the treatment.

Heartworm disease treatment often consists of bloodwork, radiographs (to evaluate the heart), and hospital stays while your dog receives the treatment injections.  Follow-up bloodwork, radiographs, or medications may be necessary.  Often the dog will need a couple rounds of treatment to take care of all of the adult and baby heartworms.  Following treatment, your dog must be kept quiet, cage rest and leash walked out to potty, while the medication works to kill the worms in the heart.

Cost for heartworm treatment?  Depends on the dog but could be $750 or more.  Currently the medication to treat heartworm disease is unavailable.  And you dog may not survive the treatment.  Cats can also get heartworm disease, and there is currently no treatment for cats.

Cost for heartworm prevention?  As little as $12 a month-that's $144 per year! (NOTE-cost varies depending on product used and quantities purchased)  A safe, effective means of preventing heartworm disease for your pet.  Some heartworm preventions now have flea control in them.  Most also have protection against intestinal parasites, meaning you could be taking care of 2 or 3 issues with 1 product!
