It always seems like your pet gets sick or hurt at the worst times: a night, on the weekend, or on a holiday. And regular veterinary offices are usually closed at those times.
Suburban Animal Clinic recommends you see a qualified emergency care facility for emergencies. Many emergency situations require diagnostic testing (blood work, radiographs) and continuous monitoring. For continuity of care, this is better done at a 24 hour facility where veterinarians and technicians are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
The fees at emergency clinics are higher than those at regular veterinary offices. This is not only because of 24/7 staffing and nursing care, but also they typically have equipment not available at regular veterinary offices, such as ultrasound, endoscopy, and other laboratory services (more so than most veterinary clinics). Some facilities also have specialists on staff to evaluate your pet when necessary. MedVet and Capital Veterinary Referral and
Emergency facilities are equipped to handle a variety of emergency situations quickly and efficiently. Your pet will be triaged just like when you visit an emergency room. Staff will take a thorough history and perform a physical exam, then recommend necessary tests and/or treatment. Often they will advise that you follow-up with your regular veterinarian once your pet is discharged. The emergency clinics we recommend routinely communicate with us about our patients.
There may also be rare times when, during regular business hours, we recommend you take your pet to an emergency clinic rather than being seen in our office. This may be either due to us being exceptionally full with appointments (and your pet would receive prompt emergency care at an emergency facility), or the veterinarian is concerned your pet may need hospitalization and continuous monitoring, evaluation by a specialist, or even emergency surgery, which may not be able to be provided in our office.
