New Year’s is often a time of celebration and parties as we say farewell to the old year and welcome in the new year. As we celebrate, it’s important to consider our pets when planning for the festivities.
If you are hosting a party, consider securing your pets in their own room. This will ensure they are safe from accidentally slipping out the door or eating something they shouldn’t.
NEVER give your pets alcohol or recreational drugs. These are toxic to animals and will lead to a trip to the emergency vet. If your pet does ingest alcohol or drugs, please be honest with the vet. Knowing what your pet possibly ate will help them to quickly and efficiently treat your pet.
NEVER light sparklers or other fireworks around your pets. Pet fur can easily ignite from one tiny spark.
Although fireworks and celebratory gunfire is usually against the law in many places, it happens anyways, especially around holidays such as New Year’s. Please keep your pet in a safe area away from the activity. A secluded room with some soft, calming music playing may help. If you know your pet is afraid of loud noises, ask your veterinarian if medication might help. Feliway (for cats) and Adaptil (for dogs) are calming pheromones that may help as well.
