June is Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month! In honor of this special month, Capital Area Humane Society in Hilliard is offering half off adoption fees for cats and kittens. Adoption fees are based on the age and condition of the cat and cover a feline leukemia test, first vaccines, spaying/neutering (if needed), and other veterinary and basic care while the cat is housed at the shelter.
Cats make great indoor pets, especially for apartments and small homes. Cats come with a vairety of personalities so there is certainly a cat out there for you! Unfortunately there are so many animals in shelters that many adoptable animals are euthanized each year because of overcrowding. Let's help this problem by adopting a cat from a shelter.
Older cats tend to have a harder time finding homes. Kittens and young cats are cute so they tend to get homes quicker. With good care, cats are living as long as 15-18 years now. A 7 or 8 year old cat may be with you another 10 years.
Dark colored cats also have a harder time finding homes as they tend to become lost in the shadows of the cage.
Before bringing a cat into your home, be sure to investigate cat behavior and care. Even indoor cats need yearly exams and vaccinations. Normal cat actions are often offensive to owners, so be prepared for this. Use caution bringing a cat home if you already have other pets or children. Be prepared for an introductory period for your new cat to get used to you and your home. He or she may hide for the first few days or weeks. Be patient and your kitty will adjust.
Remember all new adoptees should see your personal veterinarian within a few days after adoption. This establishes records and a relationship between your vet and your new pet and a vet check is often a requirement of adoption.
