The Dalmatian is widely known as the Fire House Dog and also from the Disney classic “101 Dalmatians.”  Dalmatians are born completely white, and develop their spots as they grow.

The Dalmatian belongs to the Non-Sporting Group and was accepted into the AKC in 1888.  It is stipulated that this older breed began in Dalmatia.  Dalmatians have performed numerous jobs over the years, from coach dog & guard, hunter of rats and other vermin, to a bird dog and retriever, and also as a circus dog.

Today Dalmatians are primarily companions, although they are still seen in some Fire Houses.  They are energetic dogs who need lots of exercise and stimulation to keep them out of trouble.  Untrained and unsocialized Dalmatians can be trouble, so early obedience training and lots of socialization are a must for this breed, especially if they are to be in a home with children.

Dalmations stand 19-23 inches tall and weigh on average 40-65 pounds.  Their average life expectancy is 10-12 years.  Health problems common to the Dalmatian include deafness, urinary stones, and kidney and liver issues.

This breed requires a lot of time and attention, especially in regards to training and socialization.  For more information on the Dalmatian, visit www.akc.org .
