Breed Spotlight-The Persian

Many people recognize the Persian with it's beautiful, soft, long flowing hair and shortened face.  The Persian is, in general, an easy keeper...minus the required grooming!

Persians are from Persia, of course.  Ancestors were documented as coming into Europe around 1620.  The breed picked up more in the late 19th century.  Persians first arrived on the cat show circuit in England in 1871.

Persians are the United States' most popular breed of cat.  Their beautiful coats come in a variety of colors, from solid colors, to tabbies, torties, and even pointed patterns like the Siamese.  Because their hair is long and very fine, it requires near daily combing to keep it free of troublesome knots.  Without daily grooming, the hair will become matted and uncomfortable for the cat, possibly requiring a shave down.  The shortened face also needs to be kept clean.

Persians are a laid back cat who will get along with almost anyone.  Indoors is the best place for them due in part to their fine hair coat.  This affectionate cat has an average life span of 15 years.

This breed is prone to health issues such as polycystic kidney disease and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.  They may also have eye problems including progressive retinal atrophy and glaucoma.

Famous Persians include Sassy, from the Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey movies, Crookshanks from Harry Potter, Snowbell from Stewart Little, and The Cat King from The Cat Returns.
