Winter's on its Way

Part of the country got a taste of winter this past weekend.  It's a good nudge to make sure you and your pet are prepared for the cold weather that'll be here to stay before we know it!

Pets are not going to want to spend as much time outside as the weather turns colder (yes, there will be a few dogs that are the exception to this!).  Consider a sweater or coat for your dog, especially those with very short hair.  Also be sure to limit the amount of time your pet is outside in the cold air.  You may have to shorten your walks, or shorten time playing outside.

Some pets do prefer to live outside, no matter what the weather may be.  For these pets, be sure they have adequate shelter from the wind.  Straw is better bedding than blankets, as blankets will freeze if they get wet.

Check outdoor water bowls several times a day.  You may have to chip away ice that'll form on the top.  Outdoor pets may also need a little more food during the colder months as their bodies work harder to stay warm.

Check paws for ice balls and sidewalk salt when pets come inside.  You may want to keep a towel by the door to wipe paws as they come in.

Antifreeze is a common product used in cars during the cold months.  It's great for cars, but deadly for pets.  Be sure to keep antifreeze out of reach of pets.  Clean up any spills immediately with sand or cat litter, then scoop into the trash.  If you suspect your pet may have ingested antifreeze, call your veterinarian immediately.

Now that it's colder, outdoor cats will be looking for new places to keep warm.  That new place may just be under the hood of your car.  Honk your horn or bang on the hood of your car before starting it to scare out any cats sleeping near the engine.

Don't forget your pet in this colder weather!
